NVIDIA has clarified the inner workings of DLSS 5 following a wave of public criticism. The technology operates as a frame by frame image enhancement filter rather than accessing raw game geometry. However, developers will still need to wait until this autumn for the global release.

The actual architecture of DLSS 5 differs greatly from earlier marketing claims. While company chief Jensen Huang once described the software as a generative tool for geometry control, the official presentation revealed a simpler reality. The tool operates purely as an advanced image filter. It analyzes and improves the visual output without reading the underlying polygonal data of the game engine.

Maintaining the original artistic style of a game remains a major challenge for this frame by frame processing method. NVIDIA trained the model to avoid generating unwanted details or removing defining characteristics like facial scars. Because the neural network processes only 1 frame at a time without looking ahead, it relies on motion vector data to smooth out visual artifacts between frames. This helps keep the final image stable during fast movement.

Game creators will receive extensive control over how the filter behaves in their projects. The package includes 3 distinct models that developers can swap depending on the requirements of a specific scene. Developers can also isolate certain elements, choosing to filter the background environment while leaving character models completely untouched. This level of customization could prevent the software from altering the work of digital artists.
