OpenAI just released its first physical product, and it is not the AI phone everyone expected. Built like a custom macro pad, this hardware acts as a physical bridge for their Codex coding platform. It is a highly specialized tool rather than a mass market consumer gadget.
The device looks a lot like a Stream Deck but leans heavily into mechanical hardware. It packs tactile switches, an analog stick, a rotary knob, and 1 touch capacitive button. 6 of the keycaps are translucent, featuring customizable RGB lighting so programmers can track task progression at a glance. The physical layout aims to speed up repetitive actions such as accepting or rejecting code suggestions.
Work Louder, a boutique hardware brand known for custom design tools, helped build this accessory. The partnership makes sense because the device focuses entirely on workflow efficiency. The box includes 32 custom keycaps showing different action icons. This allows users to customize the layout to fit their specific programming routines.
Programmers can buy the controller soon through the Supply Co platform. It carries a price tag of $230 in the United States and will sell in small batches. This launch is a quiet start for OpenAI hardware. Their much larger project with designer Jony Ive is slated for 2027.
That upcoming 2027 device is already causing friction in Silicon Valley. Apple is suing the AI giant, claiming they stole hardware secrets to build the future device. OpenAI claims the allegations are baseless, but the legal fight is heating up. For now, the Codex Micro is the only physical OpenAI gear you can actually buy.
