Samsung Display has begun shipping its new tandem OLED laptop screens to major computer manufacturers. The hardware is the first in the industry to clear the newly established VESA True Black 1400 certification for ultra bright panels. Laptop brands are already queuing up to integrate the technology into their premium lineups.
The new VESA certification tier demands extreme contrast performance. To qualify for True Black 1400, a laptop screen must output a deep black level of 0.0005 nits or less while pushing peak highlights to 1400 nits. That represents a 40 percent jump in peak brightness compared to the previous top standard. Samsung managed to easily beat this benchmark in testing, reaching up to 1600 nits of peak brightness at the panel level. This makes the new screens up to 40 percent brighter than standard single stack OLED displays, which usually top out around 1100 nits.
High brightness levels can quickly degrade organic screens. Samsung sidesteps this issue by stacking 2 light emitting layers on top of each other. This tandem setup shares the energy load, meaning the panel can output higher brightness using the same amount of power. The design effectively doubles the lifespan of the screen during regular daily use compared to older single layer designs. Newly formulated organic materials also help stabilize the cells under heavy workloads.
Lenovo is the first out of the gate with this technology. The Lenovo Yoga Pro 9i Aura Edition 16 inch model officially secured the new certification earlier this month. Other major computer brands like Asus, Dell, and MSI are preparing to reveal their own compatible laptops over the next year. Consumers will get their first public look at the screens during the Korea Display Exhibition in Seoul later this week, where Samsung will demonstrate the hardware with high resolution video editing workflows.
