Sony Affirms Plan to Eliminate PlayStation Discs by 2028 Despite Fan Protest

Sony has confirmed it will proceed with plans to phase out physical game discs by 2028 despite intense fan pushback. The company addressed the ongoing digital controversy during its quarterly financial briefing today. While executives acknowledge the emotional connection players have to physical media, they insist the market transition is inevitable.

The decision to eliminate physical media marks a massive shift for the PlayStation brand. Speaking to investors today, Sony chief financial officer Lin Tao explained that the broader entertainment industry is rapidly moving toward digital only distribution. She stated that the digitalization of content overall has been progressing and called it the primary factor behind the decision. While she acknowledged that games are connected to the fond memories of players, she confirmed that Sony intends to cautiously move the policy forward.

A vocal segment of the gaming community is not backing down. The advocacy group DoesItPlay took to X this week to call for a 7 day console blackout scheduled for the middle of August. The group criticized the company for closing beloved studios and pursuing misguided live service plans, stating that ending physical discs in 2028 feels like the last straw for loyal fans. Protesters hope the brief boycott will force executives to reconsider.

Investors also raised questions about how this shift will damage relations with brick and mortar stores. Tao suggested that publishers could still sell empty retail boxes containing download codes to keep store shelves stocked. When asked how a disc free PlayStation console would compete with gaming PCs, Tao argued that affordability remains their main advantage. She stated that a stable, curated console experience at a lower price point allows PlayStation to easily coexist with the PC market.
