Sony PlayStation to End Physical Game Disc Production for New Releases Starting January 2028

Sony Interactive Entertainment Transitions to Digital Only Retail Model Ending Physical Game Disc Production for All New PlayStation Titles Starting in 2028

Sony Interactive Entertainment has revealed a sudden and significant change to its retail strategy, confirming that production of physical game discs will cease for all future titles beginning in 2028. According to a statement from Sony, all new titles released for PlayStation consoles after January 2028 will be available solely as digital editions through the PlayStation Store and select digital retailers.

The policy change only affects the future and has no impact on the current availability of legacy titles. Games that are already available in physical form or are scheduled for release before the beginning of 2028 will continue to be produced on disc. This ensures no inconvenience to current customers who have established game libraries on current systems.

Sony announced that this move is a reaction to a massive shift in consumer behavior. Data indicates that digital downloads are now significantly outselling their physical counterparts. Sony aims to achieve an alignment of internal resources and modern usage habits by switching to digital only distribution for new releases.

The publisher plans to focus more heavily on digital infrastructure to provide better pricing for players and will reallocate internal resources accordingly. While the physical disc drive will become essentially extinct for new releases starting in 2028, Sony thanked fans of physical media and assured them that the company remains committed to providing excellent gaming experiences through its online store.
