StepFun is attempting to change how we interact with our mobile devices. The software startup, which was started by former Microsoft employees, recently held a press conference in Shanghai to show off a new smartphone called the StepX Neo. According to reports from the live event, this device runs on a custom operating system built specifically to execute tasks based on user intent rather than manual app clicking. It acts as an agent.
The phone runs a custom Android skin called Step AOS. Instead of opening apps and tapping through menus yourself, you simply tell the built in assistant what you want to achieve. The assistant is named Step Amoo. For example, if you want to plan a trip to another city, you do not need to open a browser and a map. The assistant maps out the travel plan and books the hotels automatically.
The assistant sits deep within the software system. It does not just open apps to show you the interface. It actually manages the workflows inside them. StepFun claims the assistant learns your habits, monitors your immediate environment, and decodes your spoken intentions. It can handle hotel reservations, suggest tourist spots, remind you to check in for flights, and even help with customs paperwork. This is done through natural language requests.
Other software features include real time translation for 32 languages during active phone calls, physical conversations, and text messages. The system integrates directly with popular third party software like WPS Office, Alipay, and CapCut. Users control the interface through a system called Natural User Interface, which blends voice commands with eye tracking and visual cues. Over time, the software learns how you use your phone and adjusts the interface to match your daily habits.
Instead of relying on remote servers, the device processes your queries locally. It uses a custom AI model engineered for mobile hardware. StepFun claims this model beat competitors in 29 separate benchmarks, though they did not name the specific tests used for the comparison. Technical specifications like the processor, storage options, battery size, and camera setups remain a mystery. The company has not shared pricing or an official release window yet.
