Valve Steam Machine Windows Drivers Officially Released for Alternative OS Support

Valve Releases Official Windows Drivers for Steam Machine Hardware Providing Core Support for Graphics and Connectivity While Requiring a Full Drive Wipe

Valve has expanded the utility of its hardware by publishing official Windows drivers specifically designed for the Steam Machine. The driver packages are now available directly on the official Valve support website, allowing hardware owners to replace the default SteamOS with the Microsoft operating system if they choose. This release provides the necessary software compatibility to run alternative systems on the legacy hardware, though the installation process comes with notable system requirements.

The files made available support the core system elements; graphics, Wi Fi, Bluetooth and the integrated card reader. Valve said on its support webpage that the files are stored in a separate section and in turn are not compatible with the firmware support which is supplied for the portable Steam Deck and explained that they maintain distinct driver packs for each device, to maintain consistency on different hardware architectures.

The company reaffirmed its belief in an open platform with regard to the Steam Machine and Steam Deck. As the machines are built as the common personal computer, consumers are able to install whatever operating system or digital platform retailer they choose. Valve does not purchase the machines, which means the owner has sole right of software choice. However, the developer explained no official customer help with Windows issues would be available.

Another technical issue for anyone installing the alternative OS, SteamOS does not support dual booting at this time, so anyone who wants a Windows install will have to wipe the entire internal drive before a clean install can occur.
