After putting this heavyweight through its paces, the results are incredibly clear. This is the fastest gaming laptop on the market right now. However, raw speed does not automatically make a computer perfect. Lenovo has recycled a lot of last years hardware to house these new chips, meaning some legacy frustrations carry over into this generation.

Design and Daily Usage

The Legion Pro 7i retains its familiar aesthetic, available in finishes like Eclipse Black and Glacier White. The lid is made of sturdy aluminum, giving it a premium feel, though the interior keyboard deck remains plastic. While it feels durable enough, it lacks the ultra premium density you might find on competitors like the Razer Blade 16 or Asus ROG Zephyrus G16. Another minor annoyance is the front edge of the laptop, which can feel uncomfortably sharp against your wrists during long typing sessions.

Weight is a major factor here. The laptop alone sits at roughly 5.65 pounds (2.6 kg). That is perfectly reasonable for a 16 inch gaming rig. The catch The massive 400 watt power brick required to feed the RTX 5090. Throw that into your backpack, and you are lugging around nearly 8.5 pounds (3.8 kg). This is a machine built for a desk, not a daily commute.

Port placement also leaves a bit to be desired. While having rear ports for power and display output is great for cable management, the side USB ports are pushed far too close to the front of the chassis. If you plug in peripherals on the right side, the cables will almost certainly clash with your mouse hand.

Display and Inputs

The visual experience is easily one of the laptops strongest selling points. Lenovo equipped the Pro 7i with a 16 inch OLED panel running at a blistering 240Hz refresh rate. Colors pop, blacks are perfectly deep, and the peak brightness hits an impressive 500 nits. If there is a downside, it is the highly reflective glossy coating. If you game in a brightly lit room, you will notice glare.

Lenovos TrueStrike keyboard continues to be excellent. With 1.5mm of key travel, large directional arrows, and a full number pad, it is comfortable for both fast paced shooters and general productivity. The per key RGB lighting is highly customizable through Lenovos software, alongside light bars on the front and rear.

However, the trackpad is a letdown. On a machine this expensive, a glass trackpad should be standard, yet Lenovo opted for plastic. Furthermore, the laptop entirely lacks biometric security. There is no fingerprint reader and no Windows Hello facial recognition just a basic 1440p webcam that produces muddy, grainy video.

Gaming Benchmarks Pushing the RTX 5090

Raw hardware means nothing without actual game performance, and this is where the Legion Pro 7i justifies its existence. We threw a mix of demanding AAA titles and high framerate esports games at the RTX 5090 to see exactly where the ceiling is. The numbers below reflect native rendering unless upscaling (DLSS) is explicitly mentioned.

The Pro 7i absolutely tears through competitive shooters. Pushing well over 300 FPS in Counter Strike 2 ensures players can fully utilize the laptop's 240Hz refresh rate for minimum input latency. If you tweak titles like Marvel Rivals down to competitive settings with DLSS Performance, the system easily holds averages near 170 FPS, keeping the action buttery smooth.

For single-player graphical showcases, the laptop routinely sets records. In titles like Alan Wake 2, the Pro 7i consistently topped charts at 4K resolutions, outperforming even massive 18-inch desktop replacements from the previous generation. Black Myth: Wukong ran brilliantly as well, though the generational gap at 4K between this and last year's highest end machines is quite narrow.

We also tested how the laptop scales under different power limits. You do not always need to run the fans at maximum volume to get a playable experience. In Cyberpunk 2077 at 1600p resolution on Ultra settings, dropping the laptop into "Balanced" mode still yielded a highly playable 60 FPS while drastically reducing fan noise. Even in "Silent" mode, the game hovered around 50 FPS natively, and bumping DLSS to Balanced pushed it well past 60 FPS with barely a whisper from the cooling system.

Heavy ray-tracing and path-tracing workloads are where the RTX 5090 flexes its muscle. Doom: The Dark Ages with Path Tracing enabled hit a respectable 50 FPS natively an impressive feat for a laptop. Throwing on DLSS Performance easily shoots that number into high refresh territory. Similarly, running Borderlands completely maxed out with Ray Tracing yielded around a 10 to 15 percent performance bump over older RTX 5080 configurations, hovering in the mid 40s natively and easily clearing 60 FPS with DLSS Balanced enabled.

It is not totally flawless across the board, however. During our testing with Cyberpunk 2077 at 1440p resolution, the 1% lows were oddly behind some competing laptops, indicating occasional minor stutters. Curiously, this issue vanished entirely when pushing the game to full 4K, where the laptop reclaimed its top-tier average frames. Turn on Ray Tracing and DLSS across the board, and this laptop simply dominates modern gaming.

Cooling and Extreme Performance

The most impressive engineering feat here is how Lenovo handles heat. Thanks to a massive vapor chamber cooler, the heat is entirely directed away from the WASD keys and palm rests. Even under a maximum stress test, the areas where you rest your hands remain surprisingly cool.

That thermal performance comes at the cost of noise. If you put the laptop into Custom or Extreme modes, the three internal fans sound like a jet engine preparing for takeoff. Fortunately, dropping the system down to standard Performance mode sacrifices only a tiny fraction of frame rates while cutting the fan noise down significantly.

Maintenance and Upgrades

The interior of the Pro 7i is very welcoming. Once you pry off the bottom panel (and bypass a secondary metal shield inside), you have full access to the internals. The laptop features two swappable RAM slots and two M.2 SSD slots (one PCIe Gen 5 and one Gen 4). Adding a massive 4TB secondary drive for a growing game library is a straightforward process.
