OpenAI has introduced new safety restrictions designed to stop teenagers from forming emotional attachments to ChatGPT. The update activates automatic protections that prioritize learning tools and actively remind young users that the chatbot has no feelings or consciousness. The system is now rolling out across all personal accounts.
The safety setup turns on automatically for any profile registered to someone under 18 years old. A major focus of this mode is education through a dedicated Study Mode. Instead of simply generating complete answers for homework, the software breaks down complex topics step by step. It asks guiding questions to test comprehension and helps students solve problems on their own. Parents can also schedule specific daily hours when every new chat must open directly in this learning format.
OpenAI is taking steps to curb unhealthy emotional dependence on conversational software. The chatbot will no longer adopt a romantic tone or encourage close personal bonds with younger users. It will push frequent reminders to take screen breaks and repeatedly state that it is just software without personal feelings or awareness. To protect privacy, the system also displays a warning message before a teenager sends personal or sensitive images.
Parents can link their own profile to their teenager to manage settings without reading their conversations. Guardians can schedule quiet hours, enforce study periods, and receive alerts during rare incidents involving extreme safety risks. However, parents cannot view private chat histories. If an adult gets flagged by the system by mistake, they can complete an age check to remove the restrictions immediately.
