Samsung Display is bringing QD OLED panels to competitive gaming in a much smaller form factor. The company is demonstrating its screen technology alongside major titles from Capcom and CD Projekt Red at gamescom, while confirming that 24.5 inch panels will enter mass production before the year wraps up. However, official retail pricing for upcoming partner monitors using the panel remains under wraps.
Competitive players have avoided OLED for years because most panels were simply too large for tournament desks. Samsung wants to fix that. The manufacturer confirmed that mass production for 24.5 inch FHD QD OLED panels will begin before the close of the year. This specific display size allows FPS players to track the entire screen without shifting their gaze. Global hardware partners are already preparing desktop monitors around the panel to target competitive players who demand fast 0.03ms response times and deep blacks.
At the gamescom show floor in Cologne, Samsung Display teamed up with Capcom, Krafton, and CD Projekt Red to show off the visual gap between older screens and quantum dot tech. Capcom deployed 90 QD OLED monitors, giving attendees hands on time with upcoming games like Onimusha Way of the Sword and Dragon's Dogma 2 Dark Arisen. Over at the Krafton booth, 85 Alienware displays ran early builds of Project ZETA and TARAE The Unbound, while CD Projekt Red showed gameplay from The Witcher 3 expansion Songs of the Past across 8 QD OLED televisions.
The push into smaller form factors follows a dominant run in the premium monitor space. Research firm Omdia reports that Samsung Display shipped roughly 2.5 million QD OLED monitor panels during the prior year, capturing nearly 75% of the entire self emissive monitor market. The company also showcased its Penta Tandem five layer QD OLED structure to prove that pixel brightness and color purity can keep up with demanding tournament lighting.
Gaming is one of the areas where consumers can most directly experience fast response times and picture quality.
