SK Hynix is reportedly exploring options for its semiconductor packaging and testing plant located in Chongqing. According to report details from Sina Finance, the Nvidia HBM supplier is working with advisors to evaluate a potential deal that could value the facility at $3 billion USD. Discussions are in the early stages, and a final transaction is not guaranteed.
Chinese investment funds and industry players are expected to emerge as potential buyers if the company moves forward with the sale. Under the proposed options, SK Hynix would likely retain a minority ownership stake in the packaging plant. The move comes as global chipmakers evaluate their manufacturing footprints in mainland China.
The semiconductor giant established its footprint in China more than 20 years ago. Its initial expansion began with a manufacturing facility in Wuxi, but the Chongqing asset later became the primary hub for backend testing and packaging. Selling this asset could help the company raise capital to fund its expensive high bandwidth memory expansion projects elsewhere.
