Steam Hardware Survey Shows Major Shift to 16 GB VRAM and 8 Core CPUs

PC players are finally leaving low tier memory behind. The latest Steam hardware survey reveals that 16 GB graphics cards have taken the top spot for the first time. This is a massive shift. According to data published on the official Steam platform, these higher capacity cards now outnumber older 8 GB options. Industry analysts at Toms Hardware view this transition as a milestone for modern computer gaming.

About 25.90% of surveyed players now run 16 GB video cards. Processor choices are also shifting toward 8 core configurations, which currently power 27.85% of systems. The trend shows that enthusiasts are actively upgrading their rigs despite high hardware costs. These hardware changes reflect the growing system requirements of modern software as older components get phased out.

Operating system choices remain heavily concentrated on the latest Microsoft platform. Around 70.26% of participants use Windows 11, while Windows 10 has dropped to 23.30%. On the lower end, Windows 7 clings to a tiny 0.08% share. Language settings on the platform show that English remains dominant at 39.61%, with Chinese following at 22.52% and Russian taking third place at 9.30%.

Individual card popularity still favors slightly older mainstream models. The NVIDIA GeForce RTX 3060 is the most common graphics card at 3.71%. The laptop version of the RTX 4060 follows closely at 3.44%, while the newer desktop RTX 5070 has quickly climbed to 3.40% in third place. Most players still target standard resolutions. About 51.10% of users play at 1920x1080, while 2560x1440 has reached 21.46%.

This recent hardware audit builds on trends observed earlier this summer. Players have started steadily adopting the RTX 50 series lineup, and Intel has managed to claw back some CPU market share from AMD. The data confirms that PC gaming is entering a demanding era where 16 GB of memory is rapidly becoming the baseline for mainstream performance.
