Tomb Raider Legacy of Atlantis Adds RPG Progression and Item Crafting

Crystal Dynamics and Flying Wild Hog have detailed major gameplay changes for Tomb Raider Legacy of Atlantis in a fresh gameplay trailer. The upcoming remake overhauls the original 1996 adventure with modern skill trees, medical crafting, and 4 dedicated weapon types. The title is scheduled to arrive early next year across PC, PlayStation 5, Xbox Series, and Switch 2.

Purists might prefer exact replicas, but the development team is taking a different route with this reimagining. Jason Epps, the design director on the project, confirmed that the team drew direct inspiration from the survivor trilogy. He explained that allowing players to directly upgrade Lara Croft gave those earlier adventures a deeper sense of personal progression. In the new game, players will unlock abilities across a dedicated skill tree by locating ancient artifacts hidden throughout the ruins.

Survival mechanics also play a much larger role this time around. Lara must scavenge raw materials from the surrounding environment to brew medicines with distinct healing and defensive status effects. The creative director noted that while crafting is technically optional, skipping the medical bench will make combat encounters far more punishing.

Gunplay receives equal attention in the latest developer breakdown. Instead of an oversized armory, the studio narrowed the selection down to 4 distinct weapons, each tuned for specific tactical situations. Combining targeted weapon handling with character skill upgrades turns the classic 1990s release into a much deeper action adventure for modern hardware.
