Microsoft has released the Windows 11 version 26H2 feature update to the Release Preview Channel. The rollout arrives as a quick enablement package under Build 26300.9278, activating enterprise tools and taskbar improvements across supported hardware. General rollout for the broader public will happen later this calendar year.
The transition to 26H2 will not require a massive operating system reinstall. Microsoft is delivering the update through an enablement package, meaning that Windows 11 versions 24H2, 25H2, and 26H2 all share the exact same underlying servicing branch. Many of the included changes will already feel familiar to active users because the engineering team has been rolling them out gradually through regular monthly patches. Upgrading to the new build simply flips the digital switch to activate these dormant features permanently.
Commercial users get several features turned on by default that previously required manual configuration. IT departments will see immediate support for Windows settings backup, allowing employee profiles to transfer across systems with zero friction. The taskbar now includes app specific jump actions to speed up daily workflows, alongside performance adjustments inside File Explorer. Corporate network administrators can test the build immediately across hardware fleets by deploying packages through WSUS, Windows Update client policies, or Azure Marketplace.
Testing the build is straightforward for anyone already enrolled in the Windows Insider Program. You simply open Settings, click into Windows Update, and manually check for updates to trigger the seeker prompt. Once the machine completes the quick reboot, regular monthly security updates will continue to arrive automatically. Microsoft also confirmed that standalone ISO files will land on the official Insider portal shortly for users who prefer performing a clean installation from scratch.
