The new handsets run on the 2 nanometer A20 Pro chip and feature a physical 6 blade lens system alongside a trimmed down Dynamic Island. Starting at $1,199, the Pro lineup arrives in 4 color options with preorders opening this week.
The 48MP Fusion Main camera represents the most intricate optical redesign Apple has put into a phone. A tiny rotor moves 6 laser cut blades to shift between f/1.48 for bright low light pictures and narrower openings for crisp group photos. Photographers can manually select from 4 specific aperture stops within the Pro controls menu or adjust shutter speed and white balance on the fly. Video recording also gains the ability to apply Cinematic depth effects after capture at up to 60 fps in 4K Dolby Vision.
To combat digital image tampering, Apple built a verification system called Apple Reference Image. The camera sensor cryptographically signs image data right at the moment of capture before processing it through Private Cloud Compute. This generates an unalterable digital negative in the Photos app. Photographers and news organizations can compare the original signed file against edited versions to verify image authenticity.
Performance is driven by the A20 Pro processor, fabricated on a 2 nanometer architecture. The chip features a 6 core CPU, a 7 core graphics processor, and a Dual 16 core Neural Engine packing 32 total cores for local AI processing. Memory bandwidth jumps by 50% compared to previous hardware. To keep thermal throttling under control, Apple rearranged the memory directly beside the silicon die, allowing the chip to sit right on a vapor chamber with 3 times the surface area of the previous model.
