Apple has introduced the Apple Watch Ultra 4, bringing a revamped Health Sensing System alongside the new S11 processor. The rugged titanium wearable extends battery life up to 50 hours in regular use and introduces a daily readiness score to guide workout intensity. Pricing starts at $799 with preorders open immediately and retail availability scheduled for later this month.
According to an official Apple announcement, the watch contains a completely rearchitected optical and electrical heart sensor layout. Green LEDs on the back now gather heart rate readings every 5 seconds throughout the entire day. Heart rate variability tracking runs up to 24 times more frequently, splitting data into recovery metrics for daily strain and overall readings for cardiovascular health. A validation study across 1000 participants confirmed this layout delivers the highest heart rate sensing accuracy in the consumer wearable market.
The headline software addition is a readiness metric that grades your physical recovery on a scale from 0 to 10. The algorithm processes recent exercise load, sleep quality, and daytime vitals to generate 1 of 4 direct recommendations: Recover, Pace Yourself, Ready, or Go For It. Unlike static scores, this number shifts throughout the day as you complete workouts or experience unexpected physical strain.
The new Health Sensing System and S11 chip take Apple Watch Ultra 4, our most rugged and capable Apple Watch, to the next level, delivering longer battery life, faster charging, and the most accurate heart rate sensing in a wearable.
Battery endurance sees substantial gains across every operational mode. Standard daily use now reaches 50 hours, while Low Power Mode stretches uptime to 84 hours. For endurance athletes, the dedicated workout tracking mode runs for 25 hours with continuous satellite positioning. A specialized long distance setting delivers up to 45 hours of constant GPS tracking, which provides enough runtime to complete a 100 mile ultramarathon on a single charge.
Charging downtime is drastically lower. Plugging the watch into the fast charger for 15 minutes adds back up to 18 hours of battery reserve. The internal pedometer also receives updated machine learning models powered by the S11 chip to calculate walking distance and step counts with higher precision during indoor training sessions.
The S11 processor enables a set of local audio tools built directly into the operating software. Sound Recognition works independently from a connected phone to warn users about doorbells, sirens, or crying infants. A feature called Live Rewind lets you double press the Digital Crown to see a text transcription of the last 15 seconds of a spoken conversation. When enabled, Siri Recap automatically creates short bullet point summaries of verbal discussions inside the Siri application.
Privacy protections are handled at the silicon level. The S11 includes a dedicated hardware enclave that processes incoming microphone data in complete isolation before permanently wiping the raw recording. The system never saves ambient voice files to disk, and the watch displays an active screen indicator alongside an audible tone whenever conversation transcription tools are triggered.
The 45% recycled titanium chassis is available in natural titanium and black titanium finishes. The updated band collection includes Trail Loop straps in dark umber, sand, and burgundy, while the Alpine Loop arrives in desert and dark olive. Swimmers and divers can pick up redesigned Ocean Bands crafted from translucent silicone in gray, kelp, and black. A luxury Hermès edition in natural titanium introduces a Grand H metal band with an integrated extension buckle designed to fit over thick diving wetsuits.
