Huawei has introduced the MatePad Air Z in China, a 12 inch tablet equipped with a 144 Hz display and a massive 10,100 mAh battery. The slate runs on proprietary Kirin processors alongside HarmonyOS 7 and sports a 50 MP autofocus camera. It is currently available for pre order starting at roughly $415, with global availability details still unannounced.
Huawei opted for a fast IPS panel instead of OLED for this release. The 12 inch screen outputs a sharp resolution of 2800x1840 pixels and tops out at 900 nits of peak brightness. Animations stay fluid thanks to the 144 Hz refresh rate. The aluminum frame measures only 5.9 millimeters thick and tips the scales at approximately 555 grams. Audio output is handled by 6 speakers built into the frame to create full sound without external hardware.
Under the hood, internal processors differ depending on the edition you pick. Huawei equipped both the standard variant and the Enjoy Edition with the Kirin T93SD processor. The Soft Light model, which features a glare free matte glass screen, runs on the Kirin T93S chip instead. All configurations come standard with 12GB of RAM and 256GB of onboard storage. The operating system is HarmonyOS 7, which adds local AI tools for real time translation, meeting transcripts, and smart note organization.
Camera hardware includes a 50 MP rear sensor with autofocus and an 8 MP front sensor for video calls. Battery life is a clear focus. The internal 10,100 mAh battery provides up to 16 hours of continuous local video playback on 1 charge. Charging capabilities also split across the lineup. The standard version supports fast 66W wired charging and carries an LED flash on the back camera module, whereas the Enjoy Edition drops charging to 40W and omits the camera flash.
Both the standard and Enjoy models support the M Pencil Pro stylus and an optional magnetic keyboard case. The entry level Enjoy Edition starts at 2799 yuan, which converts to around $415. Moving up to the standard package costs 3499 yuan, or roughly $520. The Soft Light edition sits at the top of the price sheet at 4799 yuan, which is about $714. Official store sales in China begin shortly, though Huawei has not confirmed if the device will see a broader release in other territories.
