Samsung Electronics and Qualcomm have hit a roadblock in contract talks over 2nm mobile processor production. While Samsung stabilized its next generation silicon after years of yield struggles, the two companies cannot agree on manufacturing fees. The pricing disagreement means mass production could easily slip into next year or skip this chip cycle entirely.
According to a report from South Korean business outlet The Bell, technical hurdles are no longer the issue. In past years, Qualcomm walked away from Samsung foundry lines because production yields were poor and chip performance lagged. The current 2nm node tells a different story. Internal tests on Samsung proprietary Exynos 2600 and Exynos 2700 processors show steady performance. Qualcomm is reportedly satisfied with the engineering results.
The problem is money. Qualcomm wants Samsung to cut wafer prices, but Samsung refuses to budge. The technology works, but the math does not.
Samsung previously took on low margin manufacturing orders just to keep factory lines busy and expand its client list. That situation has changed. With major contracts already locked in with companies like Tesla and Broadcom, Samsung feels little pressure to offer steep discounts. The order volume Qualcomm is discussing for this initial run is also relatively small, giving Samsung minimal incentive to lower its rates.
An industry insider familiar with Samsung foundry operations outlined the shift in strategy.
Contract delays make it unlikely that Samsung will produce Qualcomm processors before the year ends. With major clients like Tesla and Broadcom now secured, Samsung is no longer taking low price orders like it did in the past.
Qualcomm has relied on TSMC since 2021, but rising manufacturing fees are eating into profit margins. TSMC continues to raise wafer prices as tech giants fight over factory capacity to produce AI silicon. Qualcomm wants a secondary supplier to regain bargaining power, yet time is running short.
Mobile processors must enter volume production months ahead of retail phone launches. Because these price negotiations continue to drag on, Qualcomm and Samsung may miss the hardware window for current smartphone designs, forcing both sides to push talks to future chip architectures instead.
