Global shipments of foldable AMOLED displays will reach 29,000,000 units this year, climbing 44% as phone makers adopt wider tablet style dimensions. Market report firm Omdia links this surge to book format flagships from Samsung and Apple that abandon narrow display shapes. Industry projections show wide format screens taking 44% of total foldable shipments before surpassing 60% next year.
Hardware makers are abandoning the traditional 10:9 inner and 21:9 outer panel proportions. Instead, incoming designs favor 4:3 and 14:10 aspect ratios that closely match compact tablets. Omdia analyst Brian Huh reports that consumer reception to these wider profiles remains strong because they resolve usability complaints during split screen multitasking, document reading, and media playback. The wider surface area creates a natural bridge between folded and unfolded operation without awkward letterboxing.
Samsung Display commands the supply chain for this format transition. Omdia projects the South Korean panel manufacturer will expand its market share to 66% by securing exclusive display orders for the Samsung Galaxy Fold8 and the Apple iPhone Duo. As competing Chinese brands adopt similar wide profiles next year, the broader mobile market is effectively redefining foldable phones into pocket sized tablets tailored for mobile work.
