Next Generation Xbox Helix Planned as a Multi Device Hardware Family

Microsoft is developing its next generation gaming hardware under the codename Xbox Helix as a broader family of connected devices. According to internal statements reported by Windows Central, the lineup will combine a traditional high power home console with a dedicated handheld gaming system. The hardware initiative marks a direct return to core platform investment following years of multiplatform software experiments.

Microsoft Gaming CEO Asha Sharma told employees that proprietary console hardware remains the central pillar of the entire gaming business. The division experienced drops in active users and software revenue earlier in the year, but operational metrics have stabilized. Strong commercial performances from first party titles including Gears of War E Day, Minecraft Dungeons II, and World of Warcraft Forever helped restore engagement across the ecosystem. Sharma argued that expanding the brand to external platforms is impossible without maintaining a dominant dedicated hardware base.

The upcoming Xbox Helix project represents a structural change in how Microsoft delivers console hardware. Instead of releasing 1 single living room box, the company is building a hardware family to target multiple playstyles. This strategy pairs a premium home console with a native portable handheld device designed for players who want local gaming performance outside the house. Former executive Sarah Bond previously suggested this hardware shift prior to leaving her leadership role at the company.

This hardware push follows an extensive corporate reorganization that included studio closures, workforce reductions, and adjustments to the Game Pass subscription model. Microsoft is now concentrating its resources on proven blockbuster intellectual properties while integrating player feedback directly into development roadmaps. By committing to the Xbox Helix family of devices, the leadership team aims to give its core community a permanent hardware anchor rather than relying purely on digital distribution networks.
