Phantom Blade Zero Preview Combat Systems and Boss Design

S Game has released final preview details for Phantom Blade Zero, confirming an action RPG that departs from traditional Souls style formulas. Hands on testing reveals rapid combat built around 30 primary weapons, fluid parry systems, and distinct boss encounters. The title is scheduled to arrive on PC and PS5 later this year.

S Game built the combat mechanics around continuous attacking sequences, deflections, and precision dodges. Stamina is governed by an energy meter called Sha Chi. Depleting this resource halts all offensive and defensive movement, but swapping between 2 equipped weapons instantly refills the meter. This design forces players to cycle weapons regularly during battle to maintain offensive pressure.

The controls simplify execution while retaining depth. Players execute complex combos through intuitive button sequences that adapt automatically to the equipped blade. While core movements like parries and dodges remain universal, weapon choice dictates attack speed, reach, and special skills.

Boss battles emphasize pattern recognition alongside fast reflexes. Preview builds featured several humanoid encounters, including a dedicated duel against Bai Jielian. This opponent attacks across aerial and ground trajectories using an extendable chain weapon. Bosses alter their attack combinations based on their active weaponry. To prevent player fatigue, the system allows retries directly from the current combat phase once a phase transition is reached.

The campaign includes 4 difficulty tiers named Initiate, Breaker, Defier, and 66 Days. The Defier setting introduces advanced attack combinations for bosses rather than simply raising enemy health pools, while 66 Days caps total player deaths at 66 across the campaign. World progression uses a semi linear layout where blocked paths require specific keys or Phantom Edge tools acquired later in the story. Bells placed throughout the world serve as save points and fast travel markers.

The PC version supports Path Tracing graphics and operates on Unreal Engine 5. S Game confirmed that the computer release includes Denuvo anti tamper protection. The game will launch across PC and PS5 platforms.
