Tesla Patents Active Fan Aerodynamics for Maximum Downforce

Tesla has patented a fan powered active aerodynamics system designed to pull electric vehicles closer to the road. The setup uses 4 electric fans in the rear diffuser to create low pressure underneath the chassis, generating instant downforce at any speed. The technology is widely expected to debut on the upcoming next generation Roadster.

Air enters through an intake beneath the chassis and travels directly to 4 axial fans mounted inside the rear diffuser. These fans forcefully pull air out from under the car and expel it through the rear bumper, creating a vacuum effect. Traditional splitters and diffusers rely on high speeds to generate aerodynamic grip. This motorized solution produces downforce even during low speed cornering or initial acceleration from a complete stop.

The active fan system draws power directly from the main high voltage battery pack of the vehicle. Drivers can engage the system manually through cockpit controls, or let onboard software activate the fans automatically during hard braking and cornering. While active fans consume extra battery power, the instant mechanical grip gains improve track performance and vehicle stability.

Using motorized fans to generate ground effect downforce has a long history in motorsport. Classic race cars like the Chaparral 2J and the Brabham BT46B famously used rear fans to dominate competition before racing regulators banned them. In modern performance testing, the McMurtry Speirling proved how effective vacuum suction systems can be on closed circuits. Tesla filing this patent signals that active ground effect technology is moving toward consumer production vehicles, with the Roadster standing as the primary testbed.
