Sony PlayStation 5 sales surged following the launch of Marvel's Wolverine, while Microsoft Xbox hardware continued to lose market ground. Circana retail tracking shows the Sony console gained double digit revenue growth alongside strong accessory demand. At the same time, Microsoft failed to reverse falling console numbers despite the arrival of Gears of War E Day.
Circana analyst Mat Piscatella confirmed that PlayStation 5 revenue climbed 43% in the United States, while unit sales rose 24% year over year in the United Kingdom. Sales momentum came directly from the software release rather than outside promotions. The themed DualSense controller became the top selling accessory for the tracking period, and console bundles sold out quickly across retail chains.
For a franchise that does not reach the level of Spider Man, this is as good as it gets.
Microsoft saw the opposite trajectory. Hardware sales dropped 22% in the United Kingdom and remained flat across the United States. The launch of Gears of War E Day did not lift console purchases, even with an estimated production budget reaching $500,000,000. Early turnaround efforts under Xbox chief executive Asha Sharma, including console exclusivity and disc digitization options, have not improved retail demand.
Microsoft representatives state that console sales remain limited by supply rather than buyer interest. Retail analysts now look toward the future launch of Grand Theft Auto 6 to see if Xbox hardware can close the sales gap with Sony.
