Xbox app on Windows receives a major update with a new Home experience and Compact mode optimized for gaming handhelds like the Asus ROG Ally.

Microsoft has released a major update for the Xbox app on Windows, introducing a redesigned Home experience and a handheld-optimized Compact mode. These changes aim to create a more unified gaming experience across different devices and improve usability on handhelds like the Asus ROG Ally.

Xbox App Gets Handheld UI Overhaul for Windows Gaming

Handheld-Friendly Compact Mode

The new Compact mode, inspired by interfaces like SteamOS on the Steam Deck, features a "Jump Back In" section displaying recently played games. This makes it easier to quickly resume gaming sessions on handheld devices.

A new column of icons and shortcuts on the left edge of the screen simplifies navigation on smaller displays. Game Pass and Xbox store news and recommendations are also integrated directly within the Home UI.

New Home Experience

The new Home experience brings together the latest and greatest content from Game Pass and Store in one convenient place. You’ll also have access to the latest games, news, curated recommendations, free-to-play content, and deals.

Competition with SteamOS

These handheld-focused updates position Microsoft in direct competition with Valve's SteamOS. With SteamOS potentially becoming available for other handheld PCs, both companies are vying to provide the optimal handheld gaming operating system.

The Xbox app update also includes new friend request features and AI-powered search. Read the full Xbox App update notes here (replace "[Link to Xbox update notes]" with the actual URL).
