LG Smartphone Software Support Ending June 30, 2025
Remember when LG was a big player in the smartphone universe. While they exited the market back in 2021, many current LG phone owners were still receiving software updates. It appears that era is officially coming to an end.
Official Support Winding Down
The company announced it would be discontinue the use of the servers that delivered the important mobile app updates. To put it more simply, come June 30, 2025, LG phones won't receive official updates directly from the company.
These updates are delivered by over-the-air (OTA), their "Update Center," as well as the LG Bridge desktop client.
LG issued a statement indicating, "We express our deepest gratitude to all the customers who have patronized LG Electronics products. We announce with effect that we are stopping software update support for LG Electronics (FOTA), Update Center and LG Bridge mobile phones." It's a nice farewell to their loyal mobile user base.
What This Means for LG Phone Owners
If you're still rocking an LG phone, this news means a few things. In the future, officially keeping your phone current won't be an option after the deadline.
Your choices basically split off here:
- Custom Firmware: If you're adventurous and you happen to own a model that has an active developer community, you might be able to find unofficial "custom ROMs" to keep your software fairly current. This isn't always possible or available for every model, though.
- Turn to a New Device: For the majority, the simplest answer will be to change to another brand of smartphone that is currently receiving continuous software updates and security patches.
It's the end of an era for LG smartphone software support, but perhaps loyal customers can perceive some future for their phones or spot great alternatives.
Thanks, LG, for the innovation and years of support. You’ll be missed.
