It looks like AMD has quietly added a new chip to their Ryzen 5000 series, called the Ryzen 5 5500X3D. This chip is a toned-down form of the Ryzen 5 5600X3D, with lower speed rates.

The new CPU popped up on AMDs site after some talk that it might show up. The Ryzen 5 5600X3D, which came out in 2023, was AMDs first Ryzen 5 to use their new 3D V-Cache tech.

The Ryzen 5 5500X3D runs on the Zen 3 setup and has six cores and twelve threads. Its details are:

  • Base Speed 3.0 GHz
  • Top Speed 4.0 GHz
  • L3 Cache 96 MB
  • Power Use 105 Watts

Its speeds are clearly lower than the Ryzen 5 5600X3D, which has a 3.3 GHz base and a 4.4 GHz top speed. Other main things, like the big L3 cache and power use, stay the same as other Zen 3 X3D chips.

Right now, AMD hasnt set a price for the Ryzen 5 5500X3D, since its not yet for sale online. The Ryzen 5 5600X3D was about $230, so the 5500X3D might go for near $200.

Theres a big unknown about when it will be easy to buy. Past Ryzen 5 X3D models, like the newer Ryzen 5 7600X3D, were often sold only through certain shops like Micro Centre and in small amounts. Its unclear if the 5500X3D will do the same.

Buying the Ryzen 5 5500X3D makes sense depending on your needs. If youre setting up a new PC, newer AM5 CPUs like the Ryzen 5 9600X or the Ryzen 5 7600X are likely better picks. AM5 boards let you upgrade later, and new Ryzen chips built-in graphics help with fixes.

Tests show the Ryzen 5 7600X does as well as the Ryzen 5 5600X3D in most games. So, the Ryzen 5 5500X3D would likely be a bit slower.

Yet, for those wanting to use their old AM4 board, and looking to save cash, the Ryzen 5 5500X3D could be worth thinking about. While not many new AM4 choices are coming out, if you can spend about $250, the Ryzen 7 5700X3D might give you more power.
