Famed for its innovative pocket computers, GPD is bringing one of its classics back to life. Six years after its glamorous launch, the GPD MicroPC 2 has officially been launched amid a slew of upgrades.

If you thought the original MicroPC was nice, the new version will probably almost free itself from gravity. This time, GPD meant some serious changes under the hood; the MicroPC 2 has been armed with the Intel Processor N250. For the cognoscenti, this chip (from Intel's Twin Lake family, essentially a rebadged Alder Lake-N) features four Gracemont E-cores capable of running up to 3.8 GHz. What does this officially mean in layman's terms. Expect more than a doubling of performance from the little machine compared to its predecessor with Celeron N4100. That is quite the leap.

Processor upgrades alone are pretty massive, but the MicroPC 2 will also be getting:

  • 16 GB of blazing LPDDR5-4800 RAM.
  • Fast PCIe Gen 3 M.2 2280 storage for snappy boot times and loading applications.
  • And good-looking display it will be featuring a 7-inch screen, up from the original's 6 inches. Actual usability of this small device will benefit quite appreciably from that inch.

All these upgrades must have made the MicroPC 2 feel like a chubby person. Surprisingly, it will be slightly heavier (around 10% as per their measure) than the first version, but being reasonably svelte. Indeed, GPD boasts that it will be almost 36% lighter compared to the GPD Pocket 4, although some design hints have also been borrowed from that model.

Slow down a bit. GPD has stated that internal testing for MicroPC 2 would be starting this week. That usually means it's still a little bit far from a full public release. In that respect, they have yet to divulge pricing or exact availability dates.

Regardless, one thing is for sure; GPD MicroPC 2 is going to be quite the exciting refresh for the ultra-portable computing lovers. We will be sure to update you with more as this develops.
