HDMI 2.2 Ultra96 Out Now: Sets New Highs in Display Speed at 96 Gbps

The team at HDMI Forum just let out news on HDMI 2.2, with a new Ultra96 tag. This tag lets cables send up to 96 Gbps of speed. This big jump in data speed beats the older HDMI 2.1 and goes past the 80 Gbps cap of DisplayPort 2.1 UHBR20.

What's New with HDMI 2.2 Ultra96

The HDMI 2.2 sets speed at a high of 96 Gbps, two times what you get from HDMI 2.1. This rise lets you play back clean and sharp visuals at top sizes and rates. Big setups now possible are:

  • 4K size at 480Hz
  • 8K size at 240Hz
  • 10K size at 120Hz
  • 16K size at 60Hz

Though aimed at soon-to-come tech, brands are likely to start using this new setup, much like how they picked up DisplayPort 2.1.

Rules for Cables

HDMI Forum is strict about who gets Ultra96 tags. They say:

“The cable fits all HDMI 2.2 specs and is part of the Ultra Cable Approval Plan. All types and sizes must pass tests and get certified with tags on cables. For true HDMI items, you must see official anti-rip off tags on all packs and cables, plus cables are checked for life."

To make sure of 96 Gbps speed, cables must have the Ultra96 tag. HDMI 2.2 Ultra96 cables will also work with older HDMI parts, but only full speed with new tech.

Looking Ahead

From what we hear, AMD's new RDNA cards will be among the first to use High parts of this new setup, likely at speed limits of 64 or 80 Gbps. For most of today's play and visual use, the HDMI 2.1 still does the job. Yet, HDMI 2.2 Ultra96 starts the path to big changes in screen tech, especially at very high sizes.
