Sharp is painting a picture of what a straightforward smartphone can be in today's world with its new Aquos Wish 5. They're offering a device that's not just about essentials but also brings a little bit of personality with a colorful, waterproof body and a camera that doesn't bulge out awkwardly.
Along with a higher-end option, Sharp has launched the Aquos Wish 5 into the affordable-mid-range sector. It sports a cheerful plastic body, a sleek flat frame, and a tidy round camera arrangement. A growing 60% of this plastic is recycled – a nice touch for the environmentally aware. It is also ready for anything, with an IP69 rating for waterproofing.
Although Sharp maintains its price secrecy, specs indicate it would have a soft landing. You have a 6.6-inch IPS display smoothened by a 120Hz refresh rate, a little demure in terms of resolution at 1612 x 720 pixels. There is a mono speaker for audio, while selfies are handled by an 8MP front camera. Unlocking is further simplified with a fingerprint sensor cleverly housed in the side power button.
The MediaTek Dimensity 6300 is the powerhouse behind the Aquos Wish 5. This SoC design provides a nice balance and should make the day-to-day feel good with performance cores (two ARM Cortex-A76 clocked at 2.4GHz) and efficiency cores (six Cortex-A55). Sharp addresses the pairing of this chip with 4GB RAM and a choice of either 64GB or 128GB of storage expandable via microSD.
A 5,000 mAh battery keeps everything going, and Sharp mentions around 130 minutes of charging to full with a 27W USB-C charger. Software-wise, it launches on Android 15 out of the box. Notably, Sharp pledges a commendable two major Android updates and four years of security patches, a good thing for this pricing tier.
The Sharp Aquos Wish 5 is expected to be available in late June 2025, rolling out gradually in Japan, Taiwan, Singapore, and Indonesia. Sharp has not yet commented on whether the entry-level device will be launched in other regions of the world.
