For a long time, Google's web browser has been on top. Now, it faces a big test from two big AI names. OpenAI and the search company Perplexity are each making their own AI browsers. They plan to change how we look for info and use the web.
OpenAI Sets Up Its AI Browser
A report from Reuters says OpenAI will soon launch its own browser. This could happen in a few weeks. The new browser will make it easy to find stuff online by using a chat that's like ChatGPT, right in the app.
People inside say the browser uses the same base as Google's, which is open for all to use. This is the same tech behind Microsoft Edge and Opera. Google might have to watch out, as its business depends a lot on Chrome for gathering data and being the main way people search. OpenAI might even try to buy Chrome if it goes up for sale, because of a big legal case in the U.S.
Perplexity Rolls Out 'Comet' with an AI Ready to Act
At the same time, Perplexity has announced its new browser, Comet, which is also built on Google's tech. It's more than just a search tool.
Comet has a side AI helper that can do many things like book hotels, buy stuff, send emails, or plan meetings. It will also explain text on your screen in detail.
You can only get Comet if you subscribe to Perplexity Max for $200 each month, but they plan to offer it to more people through invites. It works on Windows and macOS.
It's very easy to get started as you can quickly bring over your bookmarks, add-ons, and settings from other browsers.
Perplexity has teamed up with Motorola to add its assistant to new Razr phones, and Apple might use it too, instead of its own AI.
A United Stand Against Old Ways
Both OpenAI and Perplexity are using the same engine for their browsers and are directly hitting Google's setup. Their aim is to move from old-style searches to a newer, AI-driven way of using the web. Perplexity, like OpenAI, might also buy Chrome if Google has to sell, showing how big the rivalry is where AI meets web browsing.
