New AMD Zen 6 Desktop CPUs Might Hit 7GHz by Late 2026

New word is out that AMD's upcoming Zen 6 desktop CPUs, known as "Olympic Ridge," might not come out until late 2026. These strong chips aim to hit a bold speed mark of 7GHz or more, using TSMC's new N2X process node.

A Big Goal Going for 7GHz

Some insiders say AMD wants its Zen 6 desktop CPUs to beat the 7GHz speed point. This is one of the biggest leaps for the firm, with early test chips reaching 6.4GHz. If they pull it off, these Olympic Ridge CPUs will do much better than the 5.7GHz top speed of Zen 4 and could lead in how fast they run one thing at a time.

This big jump in speed comes from using TSMC's N2X node, a better 2nm process. This is a big step in making, jumping three whole node steps from the N4P process in some Zen 4 parts.

Plan to Roll Out Zen 6 in Stages

The high-end N2X desktop CPUs are set to come out last in the Zen 6 series. Reports think this will be a step-by-step release where other Zen 6 parts come out first. This is the plan:

  • First half of 2026: Medusa Point APUs and EPYC server chips are set to come out.
  • Mid-2026: Some main desktop CPUs, maybe on the N2P node, could show up around August 2026.
  • Late 2026: The best "Olympic Ridge" desktop CPUs on the N2X node are planned for the end of the year.

This plan shows AMD is first getting out chips for phones, servers, and big groups to match with when the nodes are ready, before the top desktop CPUs come out.

Using Many Nodes for All Products

Note that the 7GHz goal is just for the top N2X desktop types. AMD plans to use many nodes for all of the Zen 6 family, with each product using a different making process.

  • N2X Node: For the top AM5 desktop CPUs (Olympic Ridge) and maybe some server types.
  • N2P & N3P Nodes: For most other Zen 6 items, like Medusa Point APUs and Venice-class EPYC chips.

While these parts might not hit the top speeds of Olympic Ridge, they are still set to boost how well and how much power each watt gives. Laptop APUs, like Medusa Halo, could hit speeds between 6.2 and 6.5GHz, a big jump from now.
