Hideo Kojima on the Lack of Originality in Modern Gaming

Famous game maker Hideo Kojima is sad about how most games in the video game world look and feel the same now. After a show called Summer Game Fest, he talked to Ssense and said there are too many games about fighting space beings or old-time beasts.

A Critique on Industry Sameness

Kojima does not just talk about the stories of these games; he says the looks and how you play them are too much alike. He knows many like these games, but he thinks it’s key to bring "something very new" to the field. He feels this new touch is mostly seen in indie games now, while his own work, like the Death Stranding series, tries hard to be different.

He tells us why he's not keen on playing Metal Gear Solid Delta Snake Eater, the new version of his old game, as it may not change much in how it plays.

Sticking to a Singular Creative Vision

Even though some don't like how deep he gets into every part of making a game, Kojima says his success comes from keeping to one strong vision. He talks about how this lets him work on many parts of a game at once. He finds this way different from how movies are made, step by step. He thinks his way helps to make his games stand out and be unusual.

What is Next for Kojima Productions

With Death Stranding 2 On the Beach out now, Kojima and his team are looking at new ideas. These are:

  • Physint A new game that goes back to the sneak/action mix he once started.
  • OD A weird and different idea that Kojima thinks will make people either love it or not like it at all.

Kojima feels sure his work will matter long term. Though he'll listen to what people say when it comes out, the early words "won't matter," since he believes the true mark of his games will show later.
