Tesla Shares Info on Electric Car Battery Life
For the first time, Tesla has let us know the usual wear in its car batteries from their own numbers. The info says a battery often loses around 20% of its start strength after 200,000 miles (about 320,000 km) on U.S. roads.
Where You Are and How Long Batteries Last
The firm says how you use the battery changes its health, stating the same 20% drop happens faster in Europe, at around 150,000 miles (about 240,000 km). Tesla adds that a car's age is as key as how far it goes.
This battery power is meant to match the normal life of the car. In the US, where cars last for 10-13 years, the battery should keep up to 80% of its first power. This is different from Tesla's own car warranty, which saves the battery for 8 years.
New Rules from China's Makers
While Tesla sets this new mark, makers in China aim higher. Battery big name CATL, with car firm NIO, plans to give a 15-year battery promise that keeps the wear to no more than 15%. CATL has made long-last power units, and they hope to use this tough quality in their EV batteries soon.
Tesla's Next Battery Plans
Tesla has not said it will make its warranty longer. Yet, the firm is getting ready to make new LFP (Lithium Iron Phosphate) batteries in its U.S. site with gear from CATL. This step to new tech hopes to:
- Cut making costs.
- Maybe give a longer promise time.
- Lift trust and worth for its electric cars in the used market.
