AMD Next-Gen "Medusa" APUs with Zen 6 and RDNA 5 Leaked

A major leak, mainly coming from Moore's Law is Dead, has shed some light on what the specifications for AMD's next APU generation called "Medusa" could be. The information points to three respective product lines: Medusa Halo, Medusa Halo Mini, and Medusa Point-all built around what is coming with the Zen 6 CPU architecture and RDNA 5 graphics.

Medusa Halo: The Flagship APU

Positioned as the top-of-the-line chip, Medusa Halo is slated for release in 2027, making irritated rumors of its cancellation. The leak paints the picture of a rather powerful chiplet-based design:

  • CPU Cores: A base configuration of 12 Zen 6 cores and 2 low-power Zen 6 LP cores. High-end versions could add another 12-core Zen 6 CCD, bringing the total to as many as 26 cores.
  • Process Technology: The Zen 6 CPU chiplets are slated for TSMC's N2P process, with the I/O die using N3P process.
  • Graphics: A powerful integrated GPU based on RDNA 5 architecture, with 48 Compute Units (CUs) and 20MB of L2 cache. This is up from the 40 CUs featured in the Strix Halo APU.
  • Memory: Medusa Halo will reportedly leverage either a 384-bit LPDDR6 or a 256-bit LPDDR5X memory controller to support the mighty iGPU.

Medusa Halo Mini: The Balanced Middle Option

AMD seems to also be working on a "Mini" version to fill the gap between high-end and mainstream. Rumored specifications for approximately the Medusa Halo Mini include:

  • CPU Cores: A 14-core configuration comprising 4 Zen 6 cores, 8 power-efficient Zen 6c cores, and 2 Zen 6 LP cores.
  • Graphics: 24 CU RDNA 5 integrated GPU with 10 MB of L2 cache.
  • Memory: A128-bit LPDDR5X memory controller expected, which might be upgraded to a 192-bit LPDDR6.
