Minisforum Launches MS-S1 Max AI Workstation
Minisforum has launched the MS-S1 Max AI workstation, designed with top-notch futuristic features. The MS-S1 Max Mini AI workstation is a new high-end model the Minisforum is launching. The compact system around which this workstation revolves is built around the AMD Ryzen AI Max+ 395 processor, which features several cutting-edge innovations such as a full PCIe slot and next-gen USB4 V2.
Core Performance and Hardware
Like its sibling, the MS-S1 Max comes with the powerful Ryzen AI Max+ 395 processor that features 16 Zen 5 cores running with SMT and an integrated GPU with a name of Radeon 8060S. For demanding workloads, the processor peaks at 160W in power. Thus, the unit has a built-in power supply rated at 320W.
Key Innovations and Design
This mini PC houses so much within its 3.2-liter shell, while also allowing for usage in 2U rack mounts.
PCIe Slot for Dedicated GPUs
One of the noteworthy features is the presence of a PCIe x16 slot that allows for installing a dedicated graphics card to the mini PC. While specific clearance details for the graphics card have yet to be provided, it is likely intended for low-profile entry-level GPUs.
First Mini PC with USB4 Version 2
The MS-S1 Max is possibly the first mini PC to sport a USB4 V2 port. This interface doubles the bandwidth of the previous standard, allowing for flash rates of a staggering 80Gbps. This will award it support for uncompressed high high-resolution and refresh-rate displays, extending the performance of such modern external GPUs as the GIGABYTE AORUS RTX 5090 AI BOX, GMKtec AD-GP1 ASUS ROG XG Mobile 2025 and the Razer Core X V2.
AI Workload Capabilities
The system has been made for artificial intelligence workloads. Strix Halo's dedicated NPU provides about 50 TOPS in AI performance, while overall, the system can provide 126 TOPS. It has the potential to support large language models (LLM) with parameters reaching up to 109 billion.
Chassis and Cooling
The MS-S1 Max has a tool-free slide-out pull design for easy maintenance and access to the internal components. The thermals are controlled by a dual-fan cooling system that shares six heat pipes and plenty of ventilation.
Release Date and Pricing
The company has advertised plans to launch the MS-S1 Max in the latter half of 2025. The information on pricing is yet to be publicized.
