GPD Showcases Battery Extension Cable for Upcoming Win 5 Handheld
GPD is creating a new accessory for the soon-to-come Win 5, the first gaming handheld expected to be powered by AMD's Strix Halo processor. The design for the battery extension cable was showcased in response to community requests, as there is a complaint about the device's battery system being external only.
On the External Battery Design
It is already confirmed that the GPD Win 5 has no internal battery, depending instead on a swappable external one. The GPD promotes this design as being able to "completely eliminate low-battery anxiety" so that users can easily swap in a new battery; however, the same design has been criticized on grounds that it detracts from the portability of their product compared to those before it.
The Battery Extension Cable Solution
The GPD extension could be a way to connect the handheld to a battery pack; this way, a user can carry the battery in their pocket while using the Win 5. The accessory demonstrated is still in an early phase, featuring a screw-mount mechanism that will make swapping that much more complex. It may very well still be easier for many people to carry a compact power bank such as the 100W Ugreen Nexode 20K. Nonetheless, the development shows that GPD is actively considering community feedback to bring about greater flexibility.
Launch Date and Expected Cost
The GPD Win 5 is expected to be launched globally on October 17, 2025. There has not been any official announcement regarding pricing; however, some recent news reports seem to support claims that the base price will be pegged at around $1,500. Extra accessories, especially the extension cable or extra batteries, will increase the overall bill. Even considering its high price and most unconventional battery, the Win 5 is set to be the most compact device to feature the Ryzen AI Max+ 395 processor when launched.
