iPhone 17 Pro A19 Pro Gaming Benchmarks Show Up to 69% Performance Gain Over A18 A17 Pro

Gains in A19 Pro Gaming Performance on the iPhone 17 Pro Compared to Older Models

As the review embargo has been lifted for the iPhone 17 Pro and iPhone 17 Pro Max, initial tests are concentrating on the new A19 Pro chip's gaming capabilities. This internal comparison shows significant positives over the A18 Pro and the A17 Pro, where performance increases at framerates in the tested AAA titles go up to 69 percent.

Improved Thermals Unlock A19 Pro's Potential

One of the important reasons for this performance boost is a design change in the phone. With an addition of a vapor chamber, Apple has now switched from a titanium chassis to an aluminum chassis; This can now allow the A19 Pro to run at a higher limit for longer without any thermal throttling.

A19 Pro vs. A18 Pro vs. A17 Pro Gaming Benchmarks

These test results from YouTuber Geekerwan in association with several AAA titles demonstrate how far ahead the A19 Pro is. Some maintained average frames per second, and some measured power consumed watts (W).

  • Resident Evil 4 Remake:
    • A19 Pro: 52.2 FPS (at 6.1W)
    • A18 Pro: 33.3 FPS (at 4.7W) - Improving A19 Pro by 56%.
    • A17 Pro: 31.6 FPS (at 4.9W) - This is a 65% improvement on A19 Pro.
  • Death Stranding:
    • A19 Pro: 47.1 FPS (at 6.1W)
    • A18 Pro: 29.3 FPS (at 5.3W) - A 60% increase by A19 Pro.
    • A17 Pro: 27.8 FPS (at 4.7W) - A 69% higher performance of A19 Pro.
  • Assassin's Creed Mirage:
    • A19 Pro: 29.7 FPS (at 5.6W)
    • A18 Pro: 20.4 FPS (at 4.8W) - Thus, A19 Pro increases by 45%.
    • A17 Pro: 18.4 FPS (at 4.5W) - increases by 61% for A19 Pro.

Higher Power Consumption Analyzed

This is from the A19 Pro conducting its tests at a relatively high-end wattage, higher than prior iterations. This is primarily because of the better thermal system. With the aluminum chassis and vapor chamber at work, heat dissipates well enough to keep the chip from throttling and allows it to manage power higher for long periods. By contrast, both the A18 Pro and the A17 Pro would have to reduce their power to manage temperatures better, thereby producing lower framerates.

Yet, it is in Death Stranding that the performance difference is most pertinent: an incredibly high increase of upward of 69 percent over A17 Pro in terms of framerates. Combining A19 Pro's architecture and better thermal management in iPhone 17 Pro models has culminated into an arms race for mobile AAA gaming.
