CEO Tero Virtala leaves Remedy Entertainment
One of the most significant shake-ups at Remedy Entertainment has seen the departure of CEO Tero Virtala. He had been at the helm for almost ten years, during which time the studio released hit titles like Control and Alan Wake 2.
Changes in Leadership at Remedy
After Virtala's exit, Marcus Maki, co-founder of the studio, was appointed interim CEO. Previously, he was carrying out the duties of the head of product.
Remedy did not clarify whether Virtala's departure was voluntary, but the rumors suggest that it wasn't. Speculations have arisen in the industry regarding its actual reason.
Speculation Circling Around FBC's Firebreak's Failure
Many people are linking Virtala's exit to the poor performance of the studio's recent release, FBC: Firebreak. Remedy's acknowledgment of the commercial failure of the game and its subsequent warning to investors about the bad effects on its coming financial report seem to legitimize such widespread speculation.
During Virtala's tenure, under his stewardship, Remedy developed and released several major titles:
- Control
- Alan Wake Remastered
- Alan Wake 2
- Single-player campaign for CrossfireX
- FBC: Firebreak
A commercially unsuccessful major release such as this could spell doom on any studio's chances of staying afloat and its leadership, and this seems to have been the case regarding Remedy.
