Montage Technology Announced DDR5 Clock Driver Released to Support Data Rates of Up to 9200 MT/s
Montage Technology has recently launched a next-generation DDR5 Clock Driver (CKD) chip targeted toward supporting memory frequencies up to 9200 MT/s. The newly introduced DDR DRAM adds a significant upgrade to the performance of client memory subsystems, thus ushering in speed upgrades for high-performance PCs, laptops, and workstations.
Advancements in DDR5 CKD Technology
This new chip represents a significant leap from the 7200 MT/s CKD chips Montage Technology rolled out in 2024 for Intel's Arrow Lake-S platforms. Increasing to 9200 MT/s not only allows faster DDR5 memory on current platforms but also paves the way for the next-generation CPU platforms anticipated in 2026, which include Intel's Nova Lake and AMD's Zen 6.
The CKD is implemented using the company's proprietary low jitter clock buffer architecture. The technology aids in high-precision clock distribution between the host controller and DRAM devices, thus boosting accuracy of clock synchronization and signal integrity.
Key features and advantages
- High-Speed Support: Data rates supported reach 9200 MT/s
- Improved Signal Integrity: Improves performance and stability of the system
- Broad Compatibility: Supports mainstream client memory modules such as DDR5 CUDIMMs, CSODIMMs, and CAMMs
- Power Efficiency: Advanced power management features provide users the option to disable unused output channels via software, minimizing dynamic power consumption
Impact on Future Platforms
The introduction of this high-speed CKD comes at a time when Intel and AMD are projected to launch new platforms in 2026, with these platforms likely to further push DDR5 memory support to higher rates. This chip lays the technical groundwork for client devices to achieve greater bandwidth and performance.
"The introduction of this CKD marks an important milestone in the advancement of client memory performance," said Stephen Tai, President of Montage Technology. "It not only tackles the most pressing challenges associated with clock distribution and synchronization for DDR5 high-speed platforms, but also lays the pathway for client devices to achieve higher bandwidth, superior performance, and compact designs."
Availability
Montage Technology is currently sampling the 9200 MT/s DDR5 CKD. The part number is M88DR5CK01P for the new chip. A complete set of memory interface chips-SPD and PMIC-to support the next-generation client memory technology have also been developed by the company.
