Modder Reimagines GPD Win 5 as a Hybrid Console with Two Custom Designs
A Chinese hardware enthusiast known as PureDIY modified the powerful GPD Win 5 portable console to derive two different builds which feature elements from other successful hybrid devices. The newly created custom builds are there to answer the shortcoming in form factor of the original, where controllers come out to be detachable from the base.
First Modification The Integrated Build
The first redesigned modification targets better portability and therefore integrates the battery and controllers within one thicker unit. The major modifications include:
- Built-in Battery: The external battery has been exchanged for a built-in 45Wh unit, thereby making the overall design thicker, although more portable, with slight trade-off in battery life.
- Detachable Controllers: Just like Lenovo Legion Go or Nintendo Switch, controllers can be detached from the main screen.
- Cooling and Display: Dual fan cooling system was kept with additional vent openings at the bottom. Non-original display was used in this build.
- Weight: The weight of the assembly is accounted as 917 grams.
Second Modification The Tablet-Style Build
This second version diverges significantly by keeping the battery external for the weightless tablet form factor designed console. Its features are:
- External Battery: This keeps the external larger 85Wh battery compared to the original.
- Tablet Form Factor: The main unit behaves like a tiny tablet.
- Wireless Controllers: The detachables connect wirelessly and carry built-in batteries to operate independently of the screen.
