Sony Launches A7 V Mirrorless Camera with Advanced AI and Stabilization

Sony unfurled the A7 V, a new full-frame mirrorless camera that embeds technology seen till now only in the higher-end models. The focus of this release is to provide silent operation through an electronic shutter, enhanced image stabilization, and the improved integration of AI capabilities to boost shooting performance.

Sensor and Processing Power

The heart of the Sony A7 V consists of a 33-megapixel Exmor RS image sensor specified as a partially glass composition. It is used together with the new Bionz XR2 processor. According to Sony, this combination guarantees the most accurate and the fastest autofocus with object detection seen in this whole camera series.

Photo and Video Capabilities

The A7 V has a very big capacity in terms of specifications addressing both photographers and videographers:

  • Photographing Supports 14-bit shooting for infinity at up to 30 frames per second (fps) with a dynamic range of 16 stops.
  • Video Available at 10-bit 4K video recording options 120 fps (APS-C mode) and 60 fps (S-Log3 mode).
  • Formats Camera supports XAVC (H.265 and H.264) and Compressed RAW HQ. One should note that recording of RAW without full compression is not an option.

Autofocus and Stabilization

AI-powered subject recognition uses 759 phase-detection points covering almost 94% of the image area. The system is low-light-capable down to EV-4.0. Other features of the camera include a 5-axis stabilization system offering up to 7.5 stops of shake correction.

Hardware and Connectivity

The body of the A7 V consists of an OLED electronic viewfinder with 3.68 million pixels. The connectivity and storage interface features:

  • Hybrid memory card slot with CFexpress and SD UHS II support.
  • Two USB-C ports and a full-size HDMI port.
  • 3.5mm jack for microphones or headphones.
  • Wi-Fi 6 module.
  • Approximately 750 actuations on a full charge.

Price and Availability

The Sony A7 V is due for release on December 18 in the US. It has been priced at $2,899 for the body only, while a kit including the basic lens costs $3,099.
