Feature complete Squadron 42; updates to Star Citizen Development given.
Chris Roberts, founder of Cloud Imperium Games (CIG), in his annual update on all things development, said that Squadron 42-the single-player campaign for Star Citizen-is now pretty much feature-complete. In the update, Roberts spoke about major developments being achieved within Star Citizen 2025 and an exciting new experimental VR mode.
Squadron 42 Campaign Nearing Completion
The focus of the update was on the status of Squadron 42. Roberts stated that it is currently playable and that it takes about 40 hours to complete in its present state. The development team is apparently quite pleased with itself, with beta testing and a full release planned for 2026.
2025-Updates to the Persistent Universe
There were about 11 significant never-ending Star Citizen updates going on throughout 2025. The engineering bay for ships was an important mention in build 4.5. Player activity is said to be high, even though things have fairly stabilized.
- Experimental VR Mode: An experimental VR mode just made it in in time for Christmas. Roberts acknowledged that it still requires some polishing, especially in the UI and controls, but it's now a fresh way to experience the game.
- Genesis System: Work is ongoing on implementing the Genesis system, which shall manage the dynamic generation of planets, complete with distinct biomes, sub-biomes, and corresponding populations under the oversight of game designers.
Player Statistics and Project Funding
Roberts revealed some new statistics on player engagement and project milestones. Players have now clocked in over 64 million hours on Star Citizen, up from 48 million hours in 2024. CIG also recorded new highs for player activity and made significant gains in server stability.
It is considered a fan-funded project since its inception in 2012. As of November 2025, Star Citizen project pledges have surpassed $900 million.
