Writer-in-Charge Identifies Night City as Cyberpunk 2077's Main Antagonist
The lead writer for Cyberpunk 2077, Thomas Marchewka, has officially identified the primary antagonist within the game. Contrary to common belief, aside from the Arasaka corporation or the mighty Adam Smasher, V's strongest enemy is Night City itself.
"In a City Against Everybody"
Marchewka stated that the team decided early during preproduction at CD Projekt RED that the city actually became a main antagonist in terms of storytelling, a story that is intrinsically about its inhabitants struggling against their harsh environment.
"Even during the pre-production of Cyberpunk 2077, we knew that Night City itself would be our main antagonist...Yeah, we have Arasaka, Adam Smasher, and a bunch of other guys, but really [this story is about] Night City versus everyone else, even the goons. It is a very cool concept to make the city the main antagonist."
While the harshness of Night City can sometimes be lost amid the main story arcs in the game, that brutality is always felt in the background. Per the studio, the city-as-antagonist vision was more pronounced in the anime series Cyberpunk Edgerunners.
Fans will get yet another chance to dance within this brutal world with the upcoming Cyberpunk TCG, a collectible card game announced in December.
