Intel CEO Announces GPU Expansion to Rival Nvidia and AMD
Intel CEO Lip Bu Tan confirmed on Tuesday that the company is developing graphics processing units (GPUs) to provide a new alternative to industry leaders Nvidia and AMD. Tan announced this information during the Cisco AI Summit through which he presented the company's plans for expanding its chip product line.
Intel has secured specialized talent to lead this initiative. Eric Demers, who previously worked as a senior architect at Qualcomm, has now joined Intel to work as their Chief GPU Architect. Kevork Kechichian, who has held executive positions at Intel, will supervise the entire GPU development project after he successfully led the data center processor division.
Tan indicated that attracting Demers required significant persuasion, emphasizing the importance of his role in Intel's competitive strategy against NVDA and AMD.
Tan provided an overview of Intel's foundry business operations which extend beyond its internal chip development activities. He reported strong engagement from multiple customers regarding Intel's 14A manufacturing technology. The company uses this node to support its objective of restoring its semiconductor manufacturing dominance and leadership position.
Intel (INTC) experienced stock price fluctuations throughout the Tuesday trading session after the company issued its news report. The stock reached an initial peak of 4% but ended the day with a 0.8% increase.
"Tan claimed that his new chief GPU architect was extremely talented after he had just hired him. Tan expressed his happiness about the new hire during the conference which took place in San Francisco.
