Amazon Project Transformer Rumors Reveal a Potential Move Back to Mobile with a Minimalist AI Smartphone Focused on Alexa and No App Store Strategy
It has been over a decade since the Fire Phone became one of the most famous hardware failures in tech history. Most people thought Amazon was done with phones forever after that mess. However, it seems that the company is not quite ready to give up on the dream of being in your pocket. Recent word from inside the company suggests a new project is currently underway. This new effort is known internally as Transformer.
The project is coming out of a special group called ZeroOne. This team is led by J Allard who many will remember from his time working on the Xbox and the Zune at Microsoft. It feels like a significant shift in strategy for Amazon. Instead of just making a clone of the devices we already have, they appear to be looking at something much more personal and built around artificial intelligence.
The most intriguing part of this rumor is the idea that the phone could skip the app store entirely. We are all used to downloading and signing into dozens of different apps. Amazon might be trying to change that. The goal seems to be a device where Alexa or another AI assistant handles tasks directly for the user. It is a risky move.
