Crystal Dynamics Implements Fourth Wave of Workforce Reductions Amid Studio Restructuring While Advancing Development on Tomb Raider Legacy of Atlantis and Catalyst Projects

Crystal Dynamics has confirmed a new wave of staff reductions, marking the fourth time the studio has cut personnel within a twelve month period. The latest staff dismissal process involves the departure of 20 workers from development teams and central operations departments. The studio experienced a challenging 2025 because it implemented three separate rounds of employee layoffs between March and August and November.

The 2026 cuts are part of a broader internal reorganization that began last year. The studio requires team structure changes to follow between different project development stages. The previous staff reductions include

  • March 2025 17 employees let go to align business needs.
  • August 2025 Unspecified cuts following the cancellation of codevelopment on the Perfect Dark reboot.
  • November 2025 Approximately 30 staff members removed during a general business restructure.
  • Current Round 2026 20 staff members affected across development and operations.

Despite the recurring loss of personnel, Crystal Dynamics maintains that its primary development schedule remains intact. The studio is currently focusing on two main Tomb Raider projects which were announced at the Game Awards of the previous year. The studio reports that these layoffs are a result of projects moving into new phases rather than a lack of commitment to the IP.

Development Details for Legacy of Atlantis and Catalyst

  • Tomb Raider Legacy of Atlantis This remake of the original 1996 adventure is still on track for a 2026 release. It is being developed for PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X/S, and PC. The studio expects this title to become its next significant achievement.
  • Tomb Raider Catalyst Slated for a 2027 launch, this project is described as a brand new entry designed to bridge the gap between series veterans and newcomers. Management asserts that the 2026 workforce reduction will not delay the current production timeline for this title.

The 20 employees who are leaving the company will receive both severance payments and assistance in finding new employment. The studio's leadership team has stated that team structures need to change when projects progress because they must achieve long term objectives. The gaming community has shown concern about the studio's multiple layoffs but the remaining staff members continue their work on Legacy of Atlantis which is in its final polishing phase before its upcoming launch window this year.

For those tracking the studio's output, the next 12 months will be critical in determining if this leaner organizational structure can successfully deliver on the high expectations surrounding the return of Lara Croft.
