Two New Tomb Raider Games to Unify the Franchise Canon
Crystal Dynamics has announced Tomb Raider: Catalyst and Tomb Raider: Legacy of Atlantis, two new titles that will seek to unify all previous installments of the saga into one single canon.
Tomb Raider: Catalyst Notes
In an interview with GamesRadar, Game Director Will Kerslake confirmed that Tomb Raider: Catalyst is a direct sequel to Tomb Raider: Underworld from 2008. The setting is several years after that game.
Playing Underworld may not be imperative for the player as Kerslake described how the game tells its story on its own. A representative for Crystal Dynamics referred to it as "the most ambitious installment in the series." No hard date was given for its release, however, judging from the announcement trailer, it is slated for a premiere in 2027.
Tomb Raider: Legacy of Atlantis
Tomb Raider: Legacy of Atlantis was announced as a second proposed title at The Game Awards 2025. This title is a remake of the original game in the series to serve as a narrative bridge between the recent trilogy focused on Lara Croft's origins and the earlier series of games that closed with Underworld.
Scheduled to come out sometime in 2026.
An Integrated Timeline for Lara Croft
The announcement, therefore, of both the original timeline sequel and a remake aimed at joining the two series clearly states Crystal Dynamics' ambitions of weaving together into one single canon all the adventures of Lara Croft. This step constitutes a giant leap in the history of a videogame franchise that is nearing 30 years.
