Instead of simply improving the old game’s visuals, the developers rebuilt it with a new engine. The game now supports native 1440p resolution and offers advanced lighting effects like global illumination and Lumen. Although some 2D backgrounds look like they’ve been AI upscaled and may appear a bit off, the 3D environments, particle effects, and updated ghost models look fantastic.

Mechano Story Studio aimed to keep the original’s soul while modernizing the experience. According to Evgenii from the studio, they wanted to honor what fans loved and introduce fresh elements for current platforms. Visually, they’ve clearly succeeded in capturing the right mood.

If you’re new to Ghost Master, it plays like a reversed version of The Sims. Instead of caring for people, your job is to scare them out of places such as a sorority house, a police station, or a cruise ship.

Ghosts can’t just appear anywhere you must bind each spirit to certain objects or places called fetters. For example, a water ghost needs to be near something like a sink or puddle, while an emotional spirit might need a mirror or an area filled with fear. When placed well, your ghosts generate the game currency called Plasm. You spend Plasm to trigger scary effects, ranging from rattling chains to minor earthquakes or even bloody illusions.

The real depth comes from combining these scares. You could cause a blackout with an electrical ghost, pushing a victim into a basement where a banshee waits to break their sanity. The gameplay focuses on manipulation and building tension step by step.

One rewarding but tough part of the game is recruiting new ghosts. Throughout levels, you’ll find trapped spirits that you can set free and add to your team.

These puzzles aren’t made obvious. For instance, releasing a weather witch locked inside a vacuum cleaner requires using a specific electrical attack to destroy the appliance. Another puzzle has you freeing a gremlin named Lucky by timing a Luxtorm ability with a casino slot machine while someone plays it. This lack of guidance makes solving puzzles satisfying, but modern players may sometimes feel stuck trying out different ideas.

The Core Edition offers great value at £19.99, including previous DLC like Until Dawn and Ghost Adrift. Features that once needed community mods such as using all ghosts in any level are now part of the game’s built in progression.

For longtime fans, the game welcomes mods right away, keeping that spirit alive. If that base content isn’t enough, a £32.99 Season Pass promises new maps, characters, and modes to keep the scares coming after launch.

While the remake is impressive, some issues remain. The mortal AI can act inconsistently sometimes a small scare causes characters to flee immediately, yet other times they shrug off major events like a localized storm.

Also, some classic soundtrack moments are missing or rearranged, which might bother returning players, though this is a minor complaint.

Cons

  • Puzzle difficulty can be frustrating due to limited clues
  • Occasional odd behavior from the mortal AI
  • Some 2D artwork appears imperfect after upscaling
