Sony IMX908 Image Sensor Details for Professional 4K CCTV Systems Including LOFIC STARVIS 3 Technologies for High Dynamic Range and Motion Artifact Reduction
The IMX908 image sensor enables better CCTV systems through its LOFIC and STARVIS 3 technologies. Sony has officially unveiled the IMX908, a specialized 1/2.8 inch image sensor designed specifically for the professional surveillance market. The IMX908 develops 24/7 security monitoring abilities through its design which solves the problems caused by extreme lighting contrasts and deep shadows and fast moving object blur.
The Sony IMX908 presents itself through its single exposure capability which delivers HDR (High Dynamic Range) support. Conventional HDR methods typically combine multiple frames taken at different exposure levels which often results in "ghosting" or blurred silhouettes when a person or vehicle moves quickly across the frame. The IMX908 uses one exposure for image formation which results in vivid details of moving objects while making license plates and facial features recognizable in extreme lighting conditions.
The sensor uses LOFIC (Lateral Overflow Integration Capacitor) technology to manage bright area overexposure while maintaining shadow detail. The system provides a dynamic range which reaches 96 dB. The IMX908 operates under STARVIS 3 because it ensures high resolution performance when light conditions become dark. The technical specifications for the product include
- Resolution 8.4 Megapixels (4K UHD)
- Sensor Size 1/2.8 inch (6.42 mm)
- Pixel Size 1.45 µm
- Frame Rate Up to 90 frames per second at 4K
- Platform STARVIS 3
The security hardware gains enhanced viewing experience through the combination of 4K video at 90 fps which improves forensic examination of fast paced situations. The combination of the 96 dB dynamic range and the STARVIS 3 low light architecture means that cameras equipped with this sensor can maintain image integrity during the transition from bright daylight to pitch black nighttime conditions.
The first IMX908 samples will reach manufacturers by March 2026. The next generation of 4K professional CCTV cameras which use LOFIC technology will enter the market this year, which will provide better security for essential infrastructure and business security systems.
