Nous Research Enables Grok Users to Access Persistent Memory and Advanced AI Reasoning Locally on the Open Source Hermes Agent Platform
Nous Research has completed a direct integration so Grok users can use their accounts on the Hermes Agent platform. As released by Nous Research, this will allow Grok users to take advantage of sophisticated reasoning models within an open source assistant with persistent, self improving memory. This assistant runs locally, on your own machine or a VPS, indefinitely and stores information between interactions in order to learn from user behavior over time.
The Hermes Agent acts as a multifaceted digital assistant which can link to various messaging services. Users can configure their agent to use any combination of services such as Discord, WhatsApp, Telegram and Signal to process their conversations. Linking a Grok subscription provides the Grok 4.3 model that provides advanced language generation and logic, the Grok Text to Speech engine for verbal communication with the assistant, and the Grok Imagine tool that generates images and video. These features are available on any xAI subscription tier.
Installation of the Hermes Agent relies on a simple set of commands executed in the terminal. For users on Linux or macOS and on WSL2 or Android through Termux, installation is achieved by executing a curl script provided on the Nous Research repository. When installation is complete, the user select the model by executing: hermes model. From here, the xAI Grok OAuth provider can be chosen; a typical authentication page opens in a web browser, after signing in, the user is able to start an interactive session by entering: hermes tui.
This development points toward a larger pattern emerging, that of integrating proprietary LLMs into open source agent frameworks. Since the Hermes Agent utilizes a self improving memory it can ensure that the advanced reasoning capabilities provided by Grok are retained across different sessions and interactions, giving the agent the ability to learn over time to provide an even better and more customized experience for users. Nous Research has stated that this integration is the first in a series that will feature various open source agents and platforms and expects more to be released soon.
